Chinese Made Easy

CNY Chinese School l Fall 2019 to present

Course Reflection

As a married international student, it seemed hard for me at first to pursue my Ph.D all on my own, especially to learn American culture and lamguage. Luckily, I met my principal Dr. Fan and she invited me to be a volunteer in her school to teach American Students Chinese.

I assisted the teachers to prepare the documents for the new class and became a substitute teacher in 2018. Later, the principal received positive feedback from parents, so she asked me to teach some students in school. I was very pleased to accept the job. While teaching, I realized students at the school are very enthusiastic and they play a big role in my decision-making when I design lessons for them. The students are from primarily English-speaking families, so I designed a checklist and recording style that engages both the students and their parents in the learning process. In class, I followed Gagne's Nine Events of instruction to design the course to meet the students' needs.

Students love to learn from me. In the summative Chinese test, all of them got very high scores and they can speak Mandarin well. I am so proud of them. I also designed appropriate games to motivate them to practice on their own and make sure I am always incorporating new activities to ensure each class is different and exciting. I will keep learning from the students and make learning fun!
